In Los Angeles Johnny Carson entertained them. They were not only buddies but business associates. The DeLoreans bought Carson's New York apartment. Carson invested $500,000 in DeLorean's venture and drove his car. (Carson was driving a DMC-12 the night he was arrested for drunk driving.)

DeLorean says safety considerations will be more important than ever in the next decade as consumers change from big to small cars. The DMC-12's manually operated gull-wing doors are regarded as safer than conventional ones because they are not jarred open as easily. Plus, says DeLorean, "they add sex appeal."
